¡Saludos desde Viña del Mar, Chile!

¡Hola hola!

It´s been over a week now. Lots going on...I was freelancing just before traveling, then I had to actually get myself organized and packed for my six week trip home.

And here I am now, in Viña del Mar, Chile. It´s winter here, but think California style winter. Sunny and damp some days and cloudy, dark and heavy rain on other days.

Walking along Avenida San Martín

I haven´t been able to travel in three years so I had to make the most of it and come for much longer. The Mr. is coming in a few weeks but I miss him! And I am so happy that Little M can further develop his Spanish and have it spoken to him by more than just my mother and I.

The first few days are always a bit overwhelming. Little M was so bad, literally jumping off the sofa´s and wouldn´t leave my side. He was a total nightmare, but now is more calm and realizing he has about a thousand relatives who are all coming to see him.

I know the winter here very well, so I packed both light and heavier pieces. Of course this very busy mamá had to dress for the occassion. I even bought some sweet boots that I will show off this week.

So far, it has been sunny and warm and I´ve been able to wear my flats. But it quickly gets cold once the sun goes down. My colored jeans have been a total hit and everyone has been quite impressed with my weight loss (22 lbs with Medifast!) and for some reason my hair (mostly the bangs) have been a topic of conversation among the women. However, it´s all been positive!

I´ll be going to Santiago soon (the capital) and I am really excited about visiting El Museo de la Moda (Fashion Museum) that I have heard so much about. I´m also looking to meet up with some blogger and social media types here in Chile. I´m curious to see how brands here are embracing bloggers, digital campaigns and social media as a profession in general. So if you know of anyone, let me know!

In the meantime, I am enjoying my family and letting them enjoy Little M. Afterall, he has two sets of very happy great-grandparents who adore him.

¡un beso grande!

Ten Step Guide to Overcoming Wardrobe Amnesia

"Oh look! I forgot I had that! I just bought a new shirt just like it."

"Look what I found in my closet, and it still has the tags on it!"

"So, that's where that skirt went!"

Fess up! You know you have made at least one of these statements sometime in your life. It's okay. Happens to us all. It's called wardrobe amnesia.

This weekend I found a dress in a suitcase I had bought (and worn) many, MANY times in London. I pulled it out, and holding it my hands, I blinked a few times and thought "how on EARTH did I forget about this?!"

See, last week I made a very bold statement on the blog, I said "I've never worn any kind of dots..." and featured a blouse that my mother had given me and claimed it "was my first time". Clearly I had thought about the situation and obviously I felt so strongly about it that I shared it here.

But, goodness, what a huge LIE that was! I had worn polka dots. Many times. And I loved that dress. How could I have possibly not remembered I owned this? I just could not understand it.

Laugh all you want, but wardrobe amnesia is a serious issue among women which doesn't get talked about very often but one that should be more openly discussed.

Right now I am living in a time when budgets are super tight in the Very Busy Familia. Yes, I spend a little here and there, but I'm talking every penny is being counted. I no longer have the disposable income I once had and I have to be extremely careful with my money.

Living with wardrobe amnesia: I forgot I owned this polka dot dress

Although on this blog it may seem like I'm always out shopping, I'm not. A lot of my looks and clothing come straight from shopping my closet and when I do indulge in some retail therapy, I think about what I am about to purchase at least 10 times before I get it. But this problem, this wardrobe amnesia, is getting progressively worse and it it costing me (and the family) big time.

This is not the first time I have had my memory completely wiped of what I own. Back in January I said I was thinking of  "going green" and again claiming I owned nothing of that color. A little rummaging around later and low and behold, out pops my FAVE dark green blazer and a pair of green Chuck Taylors that I have had for years. Unbelievable.

Why does this happen? No need for psychologists and all that nonsense. I'll tell you why...out of sight, out of mind. Simple. If it's not in front of my face, then I'm not remembering I own it. You think I won't happen to you, but it will. It gets us all in the end.

So now, I'm here to tackle my problem head on. And in the spirit of helping others who suffer from the same, I've put together a ten step guide to combating wardrobe amnesia (and save you money!)

Ten Step Guide to Overcoming Wardrobe Amnesia

1. Admitting you have wardrobe amnesia is the first step. Say it out loud, tell a friend, tweet it. However you feel it best to share. But get it out. Once you acknowledge this, you can quickly move on to resolve the issue.

2. You are NOT alone. Thousands of women (and I suspect men) suffer with the same problem. No need to be ashamed.

3. Tackle the problem the best way possible: music and wine. Seriously, turn up some tunes (or if the kids are sleeping have a silent disco with headphones) and swing open your closet doors.

4. Rummage! Take a deep breath and begin sorting. Have a good look, really get in there! Try things on again and just get re-acquainted with what you own. Work it, work it!

5. Take Inventory. Make piles for your jeans, another for your sweaters, tops, blouses, jackets, blazers, shoes, accessories, bags etc. Get it ALL out!

6. Make style assessments. From the piles, you will quickly see what can be given to charity and what you can still wear. I GUARANTEE you will find something you forgot you owned and that you can still rock.

7. Put together new looks. Grab one item from each pile and create a new outfit. Often times pieces I would never think to wear together have come to life when tackling my wardrobe amnesia in this way.

8. Quick snaps with your smart phone will help jog your memory. Make an album of what you have found before putting back in the closet, especially out of season items (for instance, winter items now) on your phone and label "In my closet". You can quickly refer to it when you feel your style memory fading away.

9. Wear your "new" clothes throughout the next few weeks - really make an effort to wear your new outfits every day. Not only will you have a sense of pride, but you will have that "I just went shopping" feeling that we love so much.

10. Repeat. While you may be feeling super confident and happy with your new found threads, the reality is wardrobe amnesia is for life. You will relapse. However, by following these steps every few months or at the beginning of every season, you will be able to lead a comfortable, stylish and budget friendly life.

How do you deal with wardrobe amnesia? I'd love to hear what you are doing to get through it.

Together we CAN overcome this!

Trendy Toddler: Olympic Style

We are very excited about the Olympics here at the Very Busy Familia.

I personally don't have an affinity for a particular sport, but it's just a fun event and the truth is we love it even more this year because its taking place in our dear London. I have always wanted to be in the city or town hosting this event and the Mr. still wishes we could have stayed for it. He even applied for tickets "just in case" but didn't get any.

I know, I know! It's going to get messy over there, but still...it's such an amazing opportunity.

I was thrilled when one of my favorite UK kids clothing company Oh Baby London, whom I've worked with in the past for the blog sent Little M and I possibly the coolest gift ever. Seriously, HOW CUTE IS THIS LITTLE WINNER T-SHIRT?!

Awwwwwwww! Just in time for the Olympics, Oh Baby London has a range of Olympic (and Jubilee) themed, onesis, paysuites and toys.

I have been to their shop in London's East End on Brick Lane and Little M has several of their trendy tops, including the blacktie playsuit, the Robot T-Shirt the Naughty Kid Sweatshirt (which are all on sale by the way!) and one of their lunch boxes.

Definitely worth a visit and every kid should have at least ONE item from Oh Baby London in their wardrobe.

And not to worry if you can't make it to London - Oh Baby London delivers worldwide and you can follow them on Facebook and Twitter

I've been a fan and customer since Little M was born and their stuff keeps getting better and better. The quality is superb, however I feel sizes run a bit small. But other than that, it gets the Very Busy Mamá stamp of approval!

What about you? Are your little one's getting excited about the Olympic Games?

Now it's your turn to like up your trendiest toddler get-ups!

**Just a quick note, I am headed to Chile for six weeks starting the 19th and despite misconceptions about Latin America being hot all the time, its not. Down there in the Southern Cone we do get winter. And yes, real winter as in snow and rain. So you may see some wintery looks from both Little M and I. Trendy Toddler will be hosted by Alex of Medicated Follower of Fashion and Angela of Mum of Three Boys. Tweets and an email update will be sent out the week before to let you know where it will be**

The Jubilee celebrations continue! Win a Stella & Dot Elizabeth Bracelet

This past week the Mr and I questioned the timing of our departure from the UK more than ever.

We had thought of staying until August of this year in order to enjoy the Jubilee celebrations and to experience the Olympics, but sometimes things just happen and you can't mess with fate. However nostalgic this past week made us, I know that we made the right decision.

But enough of my sob story! It's a happy time here, especially when I have a lovely giveaway going on.

I have been working with Washington, DC area Stella & Dot Stylist Kristin Biggs both as a PR client and as a blogger. When she saw that Stella & Dot in the UK came out with this limited edition Elizabeth Bracelet to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, she quickly got in touch with a stylist there and she placed an order.

See, this bracelet is only available in the UK and not in the US. It is valued at £26 to honor the Queen's Birth year, 1926 with proceeds going to the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Trust.

Not only did we get these beauties for us to wear, but Kristin has given me TWO to giveaway here on Very Busy Mamá! How sweet is that?!

It is a simple and elegant dark grey braided bracelet with a single shiny brass crown and Czech stones. It has an adjustable sliding closure and is lead and nickel safe. Remember, this is a limited edition!

Twenty percent of the proceeds will go to help raise funds for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Trust which aims to distribute all donations across a variety of charities across the UK and the Commonwealth.
So what do you think? LIKE? I know that I do!

And, if you like all of the Stella & Dot bling you've seen on this blog or on my instagram (@verybusymama) and are interested in becoming a stylist either in the US or the UK, let me know!

Kristin is expanding her team on both sides of the pond. Get in touch for more details, perks and how we can work together (and you get me helping you too!)

But for now, get entering and tell your friends. It is open to US and UK only.

Good luck and God Save the Queen!

*I received this bracelet for the purpose of this review and giveaway and at the same time it made me feel less homesick for L-Town*

Neutrogena's Choose Skin Health: No rays on this face!

You may have seen from my tweets and updates on instagram that summer has arrived here in the nation's capital. Clear skies, fluffy white clouds and bright sun everyday. I already have a tan from hanging out at the pool - my legs look at thousand times better with a hint of tin and my arms are a lovely golden brown.

However you may have also seen that my face does NOT go in the sun. I wear hats, and most recently my Tres Jolie Hat by Dorfman Pacific that has UPF 50!

Despite spending many summers not wearing a swimsuit due to insecurities with my body, I would go still be out in the sun and rarely did I wear sun block. In fact, my mother always encouraged me to put my face in the sun to get some color and I would lather on coconut tanning oil for the best results.

Left: Fedora and Sunnies from Target
Right: Fushia Tres Jolie Hat by Dorfman Pacific

And I don't know if you aware of this, but basically the ozone is non-existent in the southern hemisphere and one summer in Chile I sunburned so bad that my stomach turned a yellowish color, peeled and had greenish puss. I cannot believe I even allowed that to happen.

Fast forward a few years, a baby later and my face isn't what it used to be. The "mask of pregnancy" got me good and I had raccoon eyes and extremely dark pigmentation on my upper lip. Talk about a total freak show.

Of course it gets worse in the sun and for a few years now I have worn moisturizer with at least SPF 30. Needless to say I apply generously over my upper lip!

Despite protecting my face to avoid the darker shades, I also protect the rest of my body and make sure my husband and son wear SPF to avoid any long term sun damage. And even though I have fair skin, a lot of my Hispanic friends are under the impression that darker skin is not at risk for melanoma...WRONG!

So in collaboration with Neutrogrena's Choose Skin Health Campaign, I have put together a few fun summer tips for healthy sun behavior.

Remember, make small changes that can make a big difference for a healthier lifestyle. No point in being stylish and on trend if you are not taking care of yourself first!

I will be out of the summer sun for six weeks while I am in Chile, but I'm most certainly packing my facial SPF 30!

And please, by all means check out Neutrogena's Facebook page for more information and tips on how to protect yourself from sun damage and melanoma or go to a sun screening location near you.

Are you being sun safe this summer? You'd better!

*This is a sponsored post in collaboration with Neutrogena and Latina Bloggers Connect. Tips, stories and my obsession with SPF are all my own. Tres Jolie Hat provided for review by Dorfman Pacific. Hope you like them and learn something new!*

Date night style: cute, colorful & *cheap*

Today is one of those I want to punch-someone-in-the-face kind of day. Right now I could use a big glass of wine, or having the Mr. home at an early hour and a back massage. I can get the wine (but it's a little too early for that) but sadly the Mr. is working very long hours and no chance of me getting a back massage from anyone.

So I thought I'd share a happier day in my life...last Saturday's date night! I used to sneer at women who talked about "date night" and getting all excited about it. I just didn't get it. I thought, well, we live together, we see each other all the time, we go out, what's the big deal?

But then we moved back to the US and suddenly I had free babysitters (gracias mamá) and we could actually go out again, and I'm talking to non-child friendly places. You know, the kind we used to go to!

Like a real date, make out and all (do people still say that?) I mean, how great is that?! No Little M around, we can have real adult conversations, hang with other non-parent friends and again, a little smooching like the old times. And I get to come home with the hottest guy at the party guilt free. SCORE! It really has helped bring a spark back into our relationship and I think we are both much happier.

But date night style doesn't have to be all glitz and glamour, in my case I went for cute, colorful and *cheap* No, not me. Jut the prices!!

Heading to our fave French hangout Bistro du Coin in Dupont Circle

Top: Loft $15 on sale!
Green jeans:  $25 Old Navy
Cobalt bag: $24 Old Navy
Turquoise Sandals: $15 Target
Handbag necklace: 2 Primark

We had been out all day, so I switched my blue top for this cute striped orange knitted one from Loft (borrowed from my mamá) and added my handbag necklace from Primark and of course some classics like the Old Navy cobalt bag and green jeans and the turquoise sandals from Target.

I should have taken a picture of the back of this top, because it has buttons going down the back of my neck. Very cute and feminine. It got a bit colder later in the evening and I put on my fave blue blazer from Uniqlo.

Dressing nice/stylish doesn't have to cost much
Someone left a comment on another post saying they would hoping to make more money this year to buy nice clothes. You don't need a lot of money, just creativity and making sure you buy key pieces you can wear for years.

Nothing I am wearing is new, in fact you have seen them many times on here. Each item is either borrowed, re-shopped from my closet and each item on it's own is less than $30. I have still not gone the thrift store route, but I'm getting there!

Loft can be very pricey, but their sales are amazing and they have one on at least once a month. Old Navy is very well priced and have sizes beyond 16 and Target doesn't carry much costing more than $30. So really, no need to break the bank. Now get out there and find some hot deals!

And about date night, I hope you are going on them too!

besos

Trendy Toddler: Captain Adorable

This is the one time a week I can really boast about my little man. Truth is, he looks so cute in just about anything and I know us mamas say that about our little ones, but its true!

We are getting ready for a six week trip to Chile We leave June 19th (eeeek!) and I have yet to buy any winter clothes for him. Yep, we are heading into the Chilean winter and because he is growing boy, most of his jackets, jeans and shoes from just a few months ago are too short or too tight.

So I need to take a day (alone) to go out and shop for the little guy. I've done *a little* shopping of my own, but I'm set with winter threads (I'll let you know soon what I got). So for the next few weeks you will be seeing more winter styles rather than summer styles.

In the mean time, here is my very own captain adorable. Real men wear cardigans I say!

Cardigan - Primark
T-Shirt - JC Penney
Shorts - The Children's Place
Trainers/Sandals - Target
Cuteness - All his own!

He has been going to nursery/daycare three days a week and he knows he his to comb his hair and wash his face before leaving the house. Starting the grooming habits early.

Now your turn. Show off the cuteness!

TJ Maxx + Handbags + Steve Madden = A very happy mamá

Listen, it's been a loooong month.

Lots going on personally and of course working, working, working. I finally got in a few freelance payments and I thought I deserved a little treat. You know, a gift... to my hard working self. I even went as far as to tweet my desire - I've noticed when I tweet things I tend to make them happen.

After dropping off Little M at nursery, stopping by my local Starbucks for my daily iced coffee, I walked over to my neighborhood TJ Maxx.

I always start my TJ Maxx "experience" browsing the handbags first and yesterday was no different. I looped around the suitcases, passed the scarves and sun hats, bypassed the lotions and soaps and then... I literally stopped in dead in my tracks.

I had reached my destination, and, it must have been a delivery day because it was POPPING with bags of all shapes, sizes and colors. There in front of me, was a wall adorned with bright and color block/striped bags willing me to try them on.

They were just...just...so gorgeous. They definitely had the OMG factor I was looking for.

However, I was faced with too many options!

I immediately gravitated to the green, white and blue, then I realized the top two were Cynthia Rowley and despite it being a great deal at $80, that was certainly NOT in my budget.

The bottom two however were more the nice price at $40. I reached for the red, white and blue Steve Madden soft leather tote, but I thought it had too much of a Fourth of July look to it.

Much too patriotic for me - sorry!  I was looking for summer-time-chic-mama look. So in true social media and style blogger fashion, I instagramed my options and it seemed everyone had an opinion on which one to get.

I walked around the store with three bags in the cart just so that no one snagged one while I was deciding. In the end I had to choose one or leave them all behind (I sound like my mamá!)

So I took a deep breath and went for the one that had been silently calling me the entire time...

TA DA!

The rouge, white and taupe soft leather, comfy and spacious tote was coming home with me.

Ideal for the mom on the go without it being too "mom bag" looking. Perfect for work as it's not too loud and the taupe gives it a classy and sophisticated edge. I especially love the striped bow which enhances the delicateness and femininity of the bag. Yes, I thought about all this. I don't play around when it comes to handbags.

Seriously, TJ Maxx (and TK Maxx) te amo!

Like I said, I really needed a pick me up and this Steve Madden tote for $40 did the trick - I even premiered it that night at an event I went to for the Another Mother Runner Train Like a Mother book reading and signing (Yes, I run!)

What I wore:
Pink pumps - Marks and Spencer
Animal print jeans - Target
White blouse - Gap circa 2008
Tote: Steve Madden at TJ Maxx

Thoughts? Be honest! I know lots of you had varying opinions.

Have you given yourself any gifts lately? Any great TJ Maxx finds?

*Not sponsored. Just a very busy and happy mamá getting herself a much needed gift and sharing the amazing deal that this bag was*
